What is Sheet Metal Bending?

Sheet metal bending is a cold-working manufacturing process where a force is applied to a flat piece of metal sheet to cause plastic deformation along a straight axis. By pressing the sheet into or over a specialized punch and die set, the material undergoes permanent yield beyond its elastic limit, achieving the desired bend angle, radius, and 3D geometric profile without altering the overall material volume.

Maintain a minimum internal bend radius equal to or greater than the material thickness (R≥T) to prevent cracking on outer bend edges.
Bend Relief Cuts
Add relief notches (width ≥T, depth ≥R+T) at internal corners to prevent material tearing or distortion at adjacent edges.
Hole-to-Bend Clearance
Position holes, slots, or cutouts at a distance of at least 2×T+R away from the bend line to prevent hole ovality or wall deformation.
Consistent Bend Radii
Utilize uniform bend radii across a single part to minimize tooling changes and lower unit manufacturing costs.
